Sicky Sicky

Oh no, I didn't realise that the last entry was in February!

March was such a sick month. Kyran & Karina just kept getting sick in turns. First they had cough and runny nose, then fever, then cough and runny nose again  What more, there's a HFMD (hand foot and mouth disease) epidemic (or endemic?) going around, all the nurseries, kindies and primary schools have been closed until further notice. Only this week, the primaries have been started again. Supposedly there have been 300+ cases here in Brunei, and about 20-30 serious one. So far, one child (or two) has succumbed to this disease. So its been pretty scary man! When you go out to the shops & all, you can hardly see any children running around. So everything Kyran or Karina is feeling sick, we get paranoid and check their palms and feet for any signs of blisters.

The kids have been under house arrest for quite awhile already. Poor Kyran, alwez asking us to bring him out. We take him for car rides and the occasional quick trip to the supermarket (during non busy hours!). He's had 2 coughing bouts and another throat infection (thank god not as bad as the ones before). But his cough is so phlegmy & because he still doesn't know how to spit them out, he always ends up vomiting. Poor poor baby. We have been using alot of Albos oil, I think it helps somehow, especially at night when the coughing is worser.

His current cough is settling down. Hopefully he will recover fully by the time his grandma and grandpa arrives. Yayyyy! They will be here next Wednesday n staying for 3-4 weeks. Such fun!

I Love You

It was Tuesday night (Valentine's Day), and I was lying down with Kyran trying to get him to sleep. He was still moving around n chatting to me. Then, all of a sudden, he just leaned over and gave me a kiss and said 'I Love You'...

Oh the joy!

Tonsilitis!

Last week Kyran was so sick it was scary! It started with a fever on the Saturday before last, so I brought him to the clinic in the evening; we had to wait for 1 1/2 hr just for our turn cos the place was packed. Practically all the patients were sick children & they had fever too. And 2 kids vomited in the clinic.. it was a mess in there!

Anyway, the doctor said it was a throat infection n we had to give antibiotics, n because he had a cough n runny nose as well, so we had other medicine too. Of course, he remembered the last time he had medicine so we had to force him to take it, unfortunately he threw them all out right after  n I didn't want to force him again so I let him go to sleep. But sometime after midnight, he started trembling really badly n wouldn't stop, so we panicked n rushed to JPMC. His fever had shot up to 40 degrees, and the doctor explained that Kyran had convulsions in the form of tremors because his body temperature went up too quickly & his body couldn't cope. So they gave him a suppository n we sponged his body to cool it down. The doctor managed to take a look down his throat (previous doc had no success in the clinic earlier) and she declared that Kyran had tonsilitis.

Apparently, people who suffer from tonsilitis 6-7 times a year are recommended to have them removed. But in Kyran's case, he is still too young & also this is only the 2nd time he had it (last time was abt a year ago).

Anyway, it was so sad cos he was so sick on Monday, which was his birthday. On Sunday night we went to his Uncle Asif's place, who threw him a surprise birthday 'party', but he was so out of it that all he wanted to do was just lie down. His fever never really went lower than 37 deg for so many days, but eventually, after abt 5 days, it was gone. Unfortunately, his cough got really phelgmy n he was too young to learn to spit them out. So he'd be coughing n coughing n u can hear all this phelgm stuck in his throat, until finally he just couldn't swallow it back down n he just throws them all out. So sad to see, but nothing we can do :(

Well, right now, the worst of the cough is over and he is almost back to normal. Lost alot of weight  and he's not interested in food again. We're giving him multivitamins now that is supposed to improve his appetite (thank god he loves taking them) so hopefully things will improve!

PS/ So much for the MRI  Its been postponed for a month now bcos Dr Raj recommended that we wait for the new machine to be set up cos we can be with him when they do the scan. With the old machine, Kyran would be alone on the table n we would be in another room looking through the glass window. Definitely don't want to do that!

Where's Kyran's Testicle?

Last week we (finally!) brought Kyran to JPMC for his ultrasound to scan his right testicle. Not long after he was born we discovered that his right testicle was actually undeveloped so Dr Raj wanted to have another scan now to check if there are any changes.

We were supposed to go there half an hour before the scan so that they can give Kyran a sedative because he would be too hyper to sit still and let the doctor do his scan properly. But, of course, the sedative didn't work and Kyran was still wide awake but we managed to get him to stay still - I had to lie on the bed with him and the nurse kept giving him the gel for the ultrasound to play with. Luckily it was also close to his naptime. Kyran only fell asleep in the car on the way home (!) and he didn't even sleep any longer than he normally does. Haha :)

Anyway, the diagnosis is that, the atrophied testis that they found initially is now missing. Dr Raj has given us 2 possible scenarios for this. First, it means that the atrophied testis has been absorbed back into the body (something called "vanished testis") then basically there is nothing to worry about. This is because, Kyran's undeveloped testis would have had to be examined every year to make sure that it doesn't turn cancerous (although the chances are small) and for other reasons too. Or secondly, it means that what they saw initially wasn't the testis at all (could've been a nodule instead) which means that the testis is actually still undescended and still somewhere in Kyran's abdomen! If thats the case, then they would have to either remove the testis from Kyran's body, or bring it back down into his scrotum depending on whether the testis is still viable or not, and both require surgery.

So we are scheduling an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan which will be able to detect if there is any undescended testis in Kyran's abdomen. And, depending on the result, we'll just have to take it from there.

Airplane In The Sky!

We have been back in Brunei for almost a week now. Surprisingly, both Kyran and Karina coped well with the jet lag. The first half of the plane ride was horrendous! Imi and I had to juggle 3 (very heavy) handcarry bags and 2 kids! As usual, we were the last on the plane because there was such a long queue at the security checkpoint, and a long long walk to the gate. We managed to find an empty trolley for all the bags and Imi had Kyran with him on the trolley and I had Karina in the stroller.

Both kids were so hyper on the flight to Dubai, they both wouldn't sit still for a second, and just wanted to walk up and down the aisles the whole time. Kyran found a few friends and he would go up to their seats and play with their toys and bring them round to show them to me. Then there was another bunch of children behind us and he would be running up and down the aisles with them too!

When we got to Dubai, we didn't have the stroller anymore, and initially Imi was carrying his notebook bag and pulling a trolley bag AND carrying Karina at the same time, while I carried Kyran. But his arm failed him (lost sensation/went numb/gave up on him/etc) and he just couldn't hold Karina up anymore. So I had to carry Karina and let Kyran walk, holding my hand. Luckily he was good and didn't run off. After the xray machines and all that, we managed to find 2 (!!!) empty trollies so we dumped one kid in each trolley and made our way to the boarding gate. And in the boarding room Kyran was just running everywhere and shouting "airplane in the sky!" to everyone there and he had this new habit of running and then falling to the ground and lying there looking at the ceiling and not wanting to get up! So he was doing that every 5 minutes or so.. and Karina was going off on her own too in the opposite direction! Imi and I never had a chance to sit down!

Thank god both of them went to sleep on the way from Dubai to Brunei. We managed to get abit of rest and managed to have breakfast before they both woke up. Flying with one infant is difficult, flying with 2 is a nightmare BUT flying with 2 on a 17-hour flight is *literally* backbreaking and a major test on your sanity! And I haven't even mentioned flying with sick children yet :P [FYI thats an absolute NO-NO unless you have absolutely no choice! Believe me I speak from experience..]

Bath Time

Update : Kyran is still suffering from his cold and cough :( Some days it looked like it was getting better but today was proof that its not. His poor nose was running non-stop and his phobia of getting his face wiped is now back in full force. This phobia of his stemmed from his last experience with the cold when he was 6 months old, and he had that for more than a week. Add to that his phobia of taking medicine  .... We put the medicine in his juice, and its a tiny amount of juice too, but its still so hard to get him to drink that!

But anyways, Kyran has his routine in the bath now. He takes his bubble baths together with Karina, and he'd go into the bathroom and turn on the tap himself. Then I'll help him and Karina take their clothes off and in they go. Kyran loves to 'swim' in the tub and he has all his bath toys with him [at least he shares his bath toys with Karina, not like his other non-bath toys]. Then Karina will come out of the bath first and Kyran gets extra time by himself. When I pull the plug in the tub and the water has finished draining, I'll turn on the tap and he'll pick up his toys one by one for me to rinse all the bubbles off, and he'll say 'Finish, fish' or 'Finish now' and put them in the bath tidy. And he knows that the red sponge is karina's and the blue sponge is his, and he will squeeze the water out before putting them away. And he knows that the shampoo and the bubble bath goes in a particular corner and not in the bath tidy! Amazing innit :P

We reckon that Kyran's gonna be a neat freak when he grows up [just like his daddy! ]

Merry Christmas

We have been here in London for about 2 weeks now. Me, Imi, Kyran and Karina. The flight was actually not too bad - we were dreading a sleepless 17-hour flight. But the kids actually slept most of the time (at the same time) so we managed to get abit of sleep too.

Chrstmas Day was excellent. Had lots of great food and tons and tons of presents, esp for the kids. The tree was overflowing with presents. Kyran got lots of Thomas and Bob The Builder pressies. He couldn't decide which ones to play with first! He was playing with his trucks and buses and then playing with Karina's presents too :P On Boxing Day there were still alot of presents not opened yet and he was going opening them one after another, even Karina's presents, and whenever he saw a Thomas or Bob present, he would yell 'Thomas!' or 'Bob The Bob!' and bring them over to show it to us.

Then he went into one of his spasms and started singing 'Old Mac Donald' but this Mac Donald had Thomas or Percy or James in it, and he would sing 'Thomas here Thomas there everywhere Thomas e-i-e-i-oooooooo'!!! It was so funny, everyone were in stitches
